The waste heat produced in the thermal process of a power plant has to be transferred to the atmosphere by using an adequate cooling system. Economic aspects, environmental concerns and climatic conditions are the main factors for the selection of the most suitable power station process. Cooling systems can be classified according to the type of condensers and to the type of cooling mediums. Concerning the cooling medium we have the classical wet and dry cooling systems. If we have the focus of the type of condensers we distinguish between the water cooled surface condenser, the jet condenser and the air cooled surface condenser. Practical operation of power plans with indirect or direct dry cooling systems is the only technique for water saving. The following presentation will explain the technical basis of both classical dry cooling technologies.
