Aeration intensity and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) are two key parametres affecting the stabilization of long-term operating membrane bioreactor. The membrane fouling developing rate and mechanism in the submerged membrane bioreactor were investigated by different sludge concentration under different aeration intensities in this paper. The experimental results indicated: (1) There was an co-nomical aeration intensity of MBR at different sludge concentrations, which is proportional to the increased sludge concentration; (2) When the MLSS concentration was at the range of 5 - 6 g/L, Membrane fouling of MBR developed relatively slow; and(3) A dynamic cake layer could be formed on the surface of membrane, which could prevent fine particles from entering the pores, and thus alleviated irreversible membrane fouling caused by clogging and adsorption.
