In order to make effective use of geological and geotechnical data for urban earthquake disaster prevention, the authors studied the effect of deep geological structure and shallow ground to seismic damage in the 1995 Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake based on observed building damage and numerical simulation. The model for simulation consists of 2 parts: the deep structure of the urban area of Kobe city is represented by 82D section and the shallow ground is modeled by 250m x 250m grids. Pseudo-spectral method and 1D dynamic analysis were employed for calculating ground motion. The result shows that the calculated ground motion (maximum acceleration and maximum velocity) agrees with the distribution of observed building damages in general, indicating that this method can be used for hazard prediction for earthquake disaster prevention.
