Environmental Aspects of Radioactivity Risks Originated From Electrical Nuclear Activity

Initially, it is presented the actual situation and foresees the importance of nuclear energy in several countries. In this paper, we discuss two environmental negative impacts of electrical nuclear operation that society worries the most: the nuclear accident caused by a reactor melting accident and the radioactive wastes contamination. It is appreciated the classical Rasmussen Report' s conclusion: the risk of a serious nuclear accident is very low. Soon after, it is showed what is being done with radioactive wastes, adding information about how it is being treated and managed, also new research lines developed to treat high radioactive wastes. In accordance, the risk of radiation exposition to the great public is very low. Several generating sources of electric power are presented with their advantages and inconvenients through the environmental point of view. The main objective of the present paper consists on the presentation of some reliable data about this important subject—the electrical nuclear generation risks. As a consequence, we hope to be helping to soften the spread fear that nuclear energy is a form of electric generation which risks escape from the control of modern engineering .
