Rehabilitation of the Natural Resources Conservation Service Small Watershed Dams

Ohio Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) piloted the recent dam rehabilitation program for P.L.566 Small Watershed Dams and the original pilot dam program from the 1950s. Seven dams were replanned, supplemental watershed plans and environmental assessments were developed, and design drawings and specifications were prepared. Construction has been completed on several of the dams and the others are under contract for construction this year. Major repairs to concrete spillways, widening of auxiliary spillways, raising the top of dams, and relocation of the downstream houses were all included in the final designs. This presentation details the replanning process, discusses alternatives considered and describes the final design and construction problems encountered. Final cost and lessons learned will be presented.
