Importance of ISO 50001 to an Energy Manager

ISO 50001 provides a framework for an organization to improve energy performance, and pursuing certification sends a clear signal within the organization that improved energy performance is a priority. The 'Energy Review' required by the standard, along with the selection of 'Significant Energy Uses' serves to give an organization's employees context for the importance of their actions related to energy use. The level of monitoring and reporting of energy use required by the standard leads to continual improvement by creating visibility, and accountability for the individuals responsible for an organizations energy use. Lastly, by setting clear objectives and targets, and then meeting those targets, the Energy manager will have objective evidence of the value they bring to the organization. This paper will discuss the value of pursuing 50001 certification has for Energy Managers providing best practices and common pitfalls observed in over 15 ISO 50001/SEP certifications conducted by DEKRA Certification, Inc.
