In the ecologically developed world the problem of removing communal garbage is a growing problem. For the appropriate protection of the environment it is necessary to build up-to-date refuse dumps together with all the necessary security systems to prevent ecological catastrophes. Part of the funding required for the setting up of dumps comes from the payment for communal services. Common practice was to charge households for the cost of removing communal garbage based on the area of the object in which the household is located. However, in Western Europe the trend is toward paying for communal garbage based on the weight of the garbage. For this reason it is necessary to have a weighing system that can weigh the garbage in each garbage can. ATRIK d.o.o., a Slovenian company, has decided to develop a special garbage truck with a built-in mass-measuring system. The project was begun in collaboration with the LAVEK laboratory in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana. The measuring system had to be designed in such a way that it has no effect on the basic functions of the vehicle, is capable of weighing with satisfactory accuracy, is able to identify the owner of the can and is strong enough for the tough working conditions.
