The conventional detection capability of residual oxygen diffusion zones, during industrial processes, is somewhat limited. For the customer requirement of material, that is free of oxygen diffusion zones, Ti3Al2.5V tubes and Ti6Al4V sheets were closer investigated by metallographic and algorithmic means. Samples were heat treated in laboratory air at temperatures, similar to those of the manufacturing process. Subsequent evaluation through preparation and etching techniques, hardness measurements as well as GDOES, did experience difficulties. Therefore, an approach has been derived for achieving the capability of predicting small oxygen penetration depths at short to intermediate times with sufficient accuracy, by obtaining depth versus time curves. For the purpose of detection of smallest oxygen diffusion zones in tubes, a conventional industrial test was particularly modified. Combined with optical microscopy observation, an ordinary tool is now given for the verification of oxygen diffusion zone free material.
