Titanium boride clusters have been observed in some TiAl-based alloys prepared via cold hearth plasma arc ingot melting. Alloying element species has been found to have a significant effect on the formation of boride clusters under certain melting conditions. The proper melting conditions to prevent or remove boride clusters have been indicated. The boride clusters have an adverse effect on room temperature tensile ductility of TiAl alloys especially with duplex microstructures even after heavy hot working, causing premature failure and great scatters in properties.
