For years titanium alloys have been of interest due to their ability to achieve high strengths while maintaining acceptable ductility. When considering titanium for high-strength applications, the selection has typically been limited to the beta titanium alloys. However, there have recently been several beta-rich alpha-beta alloys that are capable of reaching strengths comparable to the beta alloys. The applications for these high-strength titanium alloys have been primarily in the fastener and spring areas both aerospace and non-aerospace. Controlling the thermo-mechanical processing of these alloys has always been the key in achieving a consistent final product from both a microstructure and mechanical property standpoint. Manufacturing processes have been developed for the production of bar and wire such that the advantages of these high-performance alloys can be realized. Various beta and alpha-beta alloys were processed to wire, finished and tested. In this study, a direct comparison of the tensile, double shear, and fatigue strengths at a comparable strength level will be evaluated. An analysis of the mechanical property behavior in relation to the microstructure will also be made.
