Surface Properties of Aspen Timber- an Architectural Approach

The Europea aspen, the only native poplar in Finland, has been used in the traditional building to some extent. It has been appreciated mainly because of the properties of the surface, which have enhanced the durability and aesthetical value of the timber. These properties are studied here in the microscopic level and in the general technical level in comparison with a rival species, the spruce. Aspen is equal with spruce in technical figures, but differs naturally on the cell level. The characteristics of aspen can be turned into a strenght in the markets with material based innovations and research and development.
