THE PROVISION OF A CONVERGED NETWORKINFRASTRUCTURE FOR WALES

The Welsh Assembly Government is the highway authority for Wales, and as such isresponsible for the communications infrastructure installed alongside the main trunk roadsand motorway routes (E22 and E30 TERN routes). The potential benefits of a commoninfrastructure based around the Internet Protocol (IP) have led the Assembly to adopt this asthe common medium for transmission of all communications signals, locally, on trunk routesand out to the roadside. This paper discusses the issues that developed during theimplementation phase, and the benefits that this approach has brought.
