Two experiments were conducted to examine effects of Augmented Reality (AR) used inin-vehicle navigation systems by measuring percentage of correct reaction, reaction time,questionnaires, and Event Related Potentials (ERP) from the cognitive point of view. In thefirst experiment, video images from real traffic environment and moving pictures frommotion-based driving simulator were compared to verify adequacy of using video imagesfrom driving simulator for other AR experiments used in in-vehicle navigation systems.Assuming that the moving pictures f rom driving simulator has the same effect as videoimages, a second experiment was conducted to measure effects of overlapped route guidanceinformation using AR on background moving pictures, compared among several conditions.The compared conditions were overlapped and non-overlapped route guidance informationusing AR on leading vehicle, and the overlapped route guidance information using AR whenthe following distances were 10 meters and 20 meters. The results implied that the differencebetween overlapped and non-overlapped route guidance information would affect drivers'cognition or response to the brake lamp of the leading car.
