MESHBOX: MESH NETWORK COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH USING OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

This paper describes the design, implementation and deployment of a mesh networkdata communication system using an open source mesh network protocol. The systemconsists of wireless routers running open source software. An 802.11g wireless router isencased in a rugged waterproof enclosure with an internal battery pack. An open sourceLinux distribution of router software with Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol is used in place of the commercial firmware. A web-based radio propagation application allowsrapid design of a wireless network. The system is used for research in intelligenttransportation systems and public safety, and demonstration of the capabilities of meshnetworks.
