In order to investigate the effects of bolt-hole arrangements and edge distances of bolted joints on theultimate tensile strength and failure modes of steel tension channels, we conducted tension tests of thechannels jointed with high-strength bolts. Three kinds of channels, [-75×40×5×7, [-100×50×5×7.5 and[-125×65×6×8, made of 400Mpa-grade steel, were used for test specimens. The bolt holes were arranged inone or two lines and in two to five rows. We proposed design formulas for predicting the ultimate strengthof the joints for net section fractures, inner tearing fractures and end fractures. The ultimate strength of thespecimens reported by other investigators was predicted using the new design formulas and compared withthe reported experimental ultimate strength.
