This paper presents a concentric loading test of square reinforced concrete columns confined byrectangular ties. Test variables include concrete compressive strength (45 to 130 MPa), tie yield strength(320 to 1300 MPa), and tie volumetric ratio (0.32 to 1.92%). It was confirmed that transversereinforcement does not yield in columns using high-strength concrete or tie. A method to compute thestress in the transverse reinforcement at maximum concrete strength and a new stress-strain model forconfined concrete are proposed. Over a wide range of confinement parameters, the model shows goodcorrelation with stress-strain relationships established experimentally.
