This paper explores the influence of the piled foundation on the building response to excavation-induced deformations. A hypothesis of the influence of the type of foundation, positive and negative skin friction and the flexibility of the piles is described resulting from soil deformations attributed to the deep excavation. A case study is described about the subway construction in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in typical soft soil conditions with historic buildings on timber pile foundations.
