Aluminium-based nanostructured alloys can present values of mechanical strength which are equivalent to the ones observed for high-strength steels. Several microstructures can be responsible for such properties, as examples, a dispersion of nanocrystalline phases in an amorphous matrix or a mixture of nanocrystalline and quasicrystalline phases. In the present work we report on the production of microstructures of such types in useful thickness for mechanical applications. We have used high-energy ball milling and gas atomisation to produce nanostructure precursors in two different Al-based systems, Al-Fe-Zr and Al-Ni-Y-Co. These precursors were then consolidated by two processes: hot-extrusion and severe plastic deformation. Both, the precursors and the consolidated alloys have been characterised by X-rays diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical evaluation carried out by compression tests and hardness measurements indicated promising results in both systems.
