Gaseous detectors of various designs have been for years the basic constituents of large detector systems in particle physics. With the advent of high luminosity colliders, and in view of the even higher rates expected in the new generation of machines as ELOISATRON, it became clear that the limitations of classic devices would make them obsolete. This has motivated the development of a new family of more powerful devices, generally named Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors. One of the most promising is the recently developed Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM), a fast, position-sensitive detector capable of withstanding the extreme rates expected in future colliders; the operating performances of the new device are described, and examples of its use in high rate experiments are given.
