Geothermal activity is very common in Iceland and can be directly connected to the volcanic activity. It pays a major role in the energy economy of Iceland where over 60% of the primary energy used in Iceland comes for geothermal. The principal use of geothermal energy is for space heating but it is also used for swimming pools, snow melting, greenhouses, fish fanning and industrial uses. Geothermal energy is increasingly used for electrical production. Geothermal energy is one of the cleanest energy sources available. In the case of Reykjavik the use of geothermal water has reduced CO2 emission by 100 million tonnes or 3-4 million tonnes annually.
