Fast, reliable information is critical in today's fast pacedrndrilling operations where the time value of decisions can bernvery high. The need for a system to provide real-time datarndirectly from the rig site of remote and offshore locations tornthe personal computers of the decision-makers in variousrnlocations at the same time has never been greater. PhilllipsrnPetroleum Company of Norway (PPCoN) and Sperry-Sunrnhave embarked upon the implementation of just such a systemrnwithin the Greater Ekofisk area of the North Sea with greatrnresults.rnThe use of the INSITE System, with its low-cost, advancedrncommunications and networking capabilities, on the PPCoNrnoperated wells, particularly those classified as HTHP, hasrnenhanced the operator's ability to make quicker, morerninformed decisions. It has stretched the technical resource basernby putting the critical information at the users’ fingertips,rnincluding information not normally captured or transmittedrnfrom the rig. The use of INSITE has contributed to reducedrnwell costs by allowing better and more informed decisions andrnby allowing qualified personnel to monitor operations on morernthan one rig at time from the office.rnThis paper will examine how the system was implemented andrnused and will discuss some of the operational and cost savingsrnbenefits.
