Installing and working with transformers inside wind turbine towers - safety-related issues

This paper draws upon the authors practical experience gained during the pre contract as well as the design and construction phases of the Mynydd Gorddu wind farm project during late 1997 / early 1998. The paper covers the main hazards relating to the "transformers inside towers" scenario at design, construction and operational phases, and presents some guidance towards mitigating risk. The paper is primarily biased towards Health & Safety, but also encompasses related issues of transformer faults, tower security and competence of contractors and operatives.
