FORMS OF CORROSION

Corrosion is a rather complicated phenomenon involving both the material being corroded and the environment in which it is placed. Defending against corrosion becomes more feasible if one is able to classify corrosion phenomena into various "forms." Fontana and Green pioneered this approach by advocating that corrosion be classified into the following eight forms:rn1) Uniform Corrosionrn2) Galvanic Corrosionrn3) Crevice Corrosionrn4) Pitting Corrosionrn5) Intergranular Corrosionrn6) Selective (leaching) Corrosionrn7) Erosion Corrosionrn8) Stress CorrosionrnFollowing Fontana and Greene, each one of the above forms will be discussedbelow, using their approach:rn1. Defining the distinguishing features or characteristics of the corrosionrn2. Studying the underlying mechanism, andrn3. Proposing methods of prevention.
