Isocyanates are valuable precursors in polyurethane synthesis and materials science. As a result of the facile reactivity with water, isocyanates are normally excluded from waterborne coating formulations or limited to only a few applications with storage stability. A novel technique of encapsulating isocyanates for storage in water and controlled or delayed utilization will be discussed. Blocked isocyanate nanocapsules with hydroxyl and amine functionalized polymeric shells were prepared within aqueous media through miniemulsion polymerization. The nanocapsules were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Thermal annealing of nanocapsules provided an active free isocyanate enclosed within hydroxyl and amine functional shells.
