THE IMPACT OF SURFACTANT STRUCTURE ON LATEX PAINT COATING AND PRESSURE SENSITIVE ADHESIVE FILM PROPERTIES

Surfactants play a crucial role in the process of emulsion polymerization. However, these same surfactants can adversely affect the performance of the resulting latex as a result of their surface activity. We have found that the structure of the surfactant hydrophobe in the emulsion polymerization process can impact the properties of latex paint coatings and pressure sensitive adhesives. We will present data demonstrating the behavior of different surfactants in application performance tests and offer explanations based on structure-property relationships.
