The increasing demand for low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and less energy intensive processing has put waterborne coating technologies in the forefront. Recent advances have led to the development of novel waterborne systems based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymers or copolymers: a step towards extremely weatherable "green" coatings.rnThis new technology platform is based upon hybrid latex particles incorporating both fluoropolymer and acrylic resin. In previous work, we had predicted that an interpenetrating network (IPN) morphology would have the best weathering performance, In this paper we present new Florida weathering results which confirm these predictions.rnVarious national and local initiatives are now underway to encourage or mandate the use of "Cool Roof technologies, to mitigate urban heat island effect and reduce energy consumption. Most of the Cool Roof standards use the Total solar reflectance (TSR) as the main measure of how much solar radiation is reflected from the surface of an object. For our Florida test panels, measured TSR values indicate that coatings based on the new system will easily surpass some of the most stringent Cool Roof standards now being proposed, including California's Title 24 requirements. For after-market roof coatings, a variety of other physical properties are also necessary. We discuss how the novel waterborne fluoropolymer technology can meet these various requirements, in terms of structure-property relationships.
