EVALUTING A HOMEMADE SLUDGE BAGGER FOR SOLIDS WASTING AT SMALL PACKAGE PLANTS

Maintaining optimum solids levels in small and very small wastewater treatment plants remains a constant operational challenge. rnSolids wasting procedures are poorly monitored and lacking in flexibility. The use of gravity bagger systems has become popular, and a number of small plants in West Virginia now are equipped with such units. Solids wasting becomes an even greater challenge at very small extended aeration package plants - of which there are hundreds in the Mountain State. WVDEP Inspector Larry Robertson has developed a “homemade” sludge bagger intended for use at such plants. A Robertson Sludge Bagger (RSB) was installed on one of the Cedar Lakes package plants in the spring of 2002. (Figure 1) During the summers of 2002 and 2003 samples were collected from bags of sludge generated by the Cedar Lakes RSB. Bagged sludge samples were compared with samples taken from the Cottageville PSD wastewater plant which has a conventional 12 bag unit manufactured by a well know national company. Preliminary results of this comparison are outlined below.
