The role of UV disinfection in the U.S. is changing. UV dose requirements are changing due tothe discovery of UV-resistant virus and UV-sensitive protozoan cysts/oocysts. UV is beingintroduced to municipal drinking water applications with strict requirements for dose deliverymonitoring and validation. Reclaimed wastewater UV applications after membrane filtrationreflect drinking water applications more than wastewater applications. This paper discussesdifferences between drinking water, wastewater, and reclaimed wastewater applications of UVdisinfection, with an emphasis on water quality impacts, UV dose requirements, compliancemonitoring, and validation. Appreciating these differences will assist utilities in betterunderstanding their UV needs.
