MORE THAN PRETTY PICTURES: GIS-BASED INFORMATION MANAGEMENT TOOLS SUPPORT BOTH CSO PLANNING AND PRELIMINARY DESIGN EFFORTS

Information management has become a high profile activity on planning levelrnenvironmental engineering projects. As the level of detail in watershed studies,rncollection system analyses, and receiving water studies increases, the amount ofrninformation that must be managed also increases. Today's desktop databasernapplications and GIS technologies provide cost-effective, efficient tools for managingrnsystem data and linking that data to computer modeling tools. Efficient use of thesernsoftwares is now a frequent component of planning level projects. However, to justifyrnthe investment in information management tools, municipalities have the right to expectrnthat their tools can be carried beyond the study phase and into the preliminary designrnprocess. This paper will present how the City of Fort Wayne has successfully applied arnconsistent set of GIS-based information management tools to support both their CSOrnplanning efforts and preliminary design process.
