APPLICATION OF CONSEQUENCE FREQUENCY ASSESSMENT TO ESTIMATE VIRUS REMOVAL IN AN AWT FACILITY

The consequence frequency assessment methodology of assessing treatment plantrneffectiveness was applied to estimate the removal efficiency of MS-2 bacteriophagernthrough an advanced water treatment facility. The work was conducted for the City ofrnSan Diego at the Aqua 2000 Research Center as one component of an investigationrnexploring the feasibility of reclaiming waste water to potable quality. This aspect of thatrninvestigation takes advantage of a probabilistic method of assessing treatment plantrnreliability. The methods presented are consistent with those outlined by the NationalrnResearch Council in a recent publication discussing the viability of augmentingrndrinking water supplies with reclaimed water.rnA detailed description of how this investigation was carried out is presented. Thernapplication of the consequence frequency assessment methodology to estimaterntreatment plant performance demonstrates that the approach is straightforward andrneasily understood. It is suggested that the approach employed in this investigationrnmay be a practical methodology to assess the effectiveness of treatment processrnperformance for a variety of treatment systems and for constituents of interest.
