The Arlington Water Pollution Control Plant has been undergoing a massivernreengineering effort in the past four years. This paper presents the results to date of arnwork in progress. The major accomplishment so far has been a reduction in staff of 58rnpositions with no negative impact on quality of work. Expenditures have been droppingrneach year. The most significant effort has been in the area of multi-skilling ofrnoperations staff, with a considerable amount of preventive maintenance and correctivernmaintenance being moved to the shifts. The organizational structure was flattened, andrnreductions occurred in the administration and management area as well. There havernbeen some major accomplishments in the area of automating the plant using arndistributed control system. Currently, a competitive assessment is being done on thernplant operation to see how we compare with the private sector.
