摘要

Prediction of leachate generation in modern landfill facilities is necessary to size storage, treatment, and transport facilities. Engineers have used the EPA HELP model and other estimating methods to estimate daily, monthly, and annual volumes of leachate generated at facilities. Collection, treatment, and disposal of municipal leachate has had great impacts to operations of disposal facilities since the mid 1980's. Prince George's County, Maryland has been monitoring leachate generation at their lined landfills since 1992. The site includes 5 active lined landfill cells that are currently operational. A total of 11 cells are planned in a contiguous disposal area of approximately 134 acres with a capacity of 12,000,000 cubic yards. A new landfill cell is opened approximately each calendar year. A stormwater segregation barrier is employed in each cell to divide the cells in half to reduce leachate generation. EA Engineering, Science, and Technology has monitored leachate generation over the six-year period in parallel with the monthly rainfall and operational practices. This data has aided the county in predicting future storage/treatment needs to handle leachate generated at the site as cell area increases. A regression equation was developed to relate observed leachate generation with operational practices/rainfall data. This information can be used to predict future leachate generation and the need for storage and disposal capacities at the facility. The predictions produce reasonable results with known precipitation and operational practices, natural variability in precipitation extremes impact forecasting of leachate generation.
