The purpose of this panel is to discuss what is required to demonstrate the efficacy of landfill bioreactor technology. Life-cycle techniques that consider energy consumption and recovery, all liquid and gaseous emissions, and the final state of the waste should be used to demonstrate a landfill technology. Sampling plans should examine the carbon and nitrogen cycle as a basis to quantify the effects of bioreactor technology on solid waste. Emissions, landfill gas collected, liquids/gases added, solid mass changes, and leachate are typically evaluated. The panelists were selected because of their experience in the landfill bioreactor field.
