A Decade of Landfill Capping Experience

Current regulations in the United States require the use of a barrier to be placed over lined landfills to limit the infiltration of surface water to the waste and control the gas emissions from the waste. This barrier must be protected in a manner that ensures an adequate service life of the barrier. This paper reviews the design considerations and observed performance of these final cover systems over the past decade. Additionally, the paper summarizes existing concerns and potential new requirements for landfill caps in the next decade.
