Store and forward packet radio networks often must be able tonforward a packet through several radios to be able to deliver the packetnto its destination. Forwarding protocols are required to control thenrelay of packets, and the protocols must account for the highnvariability of the qualities of the links and the unique characteristicsnof frequency-hop spread-spectrum signaling. The authors investigate onenaspect of the forwarding protocol that allows multiple packets to benincluded in each transmission attempt. The capture property ofnfrequency-hop signaling and the behavior of store and forward packetnradio networks are exploited in the design of protocols that permitnmultiple-packet transmissions. In general, a potential tradeoff arisesnbecause the use of multiple packet transmissions can increase thenthroughput, but it can also increase the delay. In certain situations,nhowever, the delay is decreased with the use of multiple-packetntransmissions, or at least the increase in delay is not too great. Twonnew transmission protocols that employ multiple-packet transmissions arendescribed, and their performance is evaluated in a store and forwardnpacket radio network simulation
