The paper summarizes the results of a joint effort between CECOMnand MITRE. The effort focused on evaluating communication protocols as anmeans for battlefield digitization. Preliminary observations are made onnthe effectiveness of MIL-STD-188-220 as the standard protocol for CNRnnets. This paper identifies key features impacting network performancenand poses recommendations for further investigation. Hybrid voice andndata networks, internetworking, and their impact on performance is alsonaddressed. Some of the proposals are tentative and cannot be fullynevaluated without the benefit of modeling and simulation (M&S).nM&S can be used to optimize system parameters and estimate thenimpact of recommended changes to system performance. Accordingly,nrecommendations are given for follow-on M&S activities
