This paper discusses the advantages of using HCFC-141b as a replacement for CFC-11 in rigid polyurethane and polyisocyanurate form. Elimination of CFC-11 as a foam blowing agent is required to meet the regulatory mandates of individual countries in support of the Montreal Protocol and subsequent amendments that limit and eventually phase out the use of ozone depleting substances, including CFCs. This paper also discusses HFC-245fa, a zero ODP, liquid HFC currently under development by AlliedSignal as a replacement for HFC-141b, which will also eventually be phased out because of its small ozone depletion potential. Data is presented that demonstrates that the conversion from CFC-l 1 to HCFC-141b and ultimately to HFC-245fa offers the optimum combination of cost effectiveness, environmental soundness, and performance.
