Urban Cultural Strategies and Urban Spatial Restructuring: A Case Study of Nanjing

摘要

Based on the analysis of the tendency of urban cultural strategies and their spatial effects, the paper takes Nanjing, the province capital city of Jiangsu, which is a famous historic cultural city as well as a heavy industry base, as the case to explore the urban cultural strategies it had been taking and how do they influence on the urban spatial structure. The paper found that the cultural strategies of Nanjing had been turned from social-cultural oriented to economic oriented, from culture and heritage protection to city marketing, which followed the same track of other cities in the world. The cultural economic policy and city marketing policy undertaken by Nanjing were mainly including building cultural infrastructure, enlarging college and research institute, promoting culture industry, making cultural place and hosting great events. The cultural strategies restructure the urban space of Nanjing in that they not only prompt the urban expanding more rapidly, but also reshape the intra urban space through replacing the function of built area, making special attractive place and developing cultural cluster district.
