The interaction of a buried pipe and the soil embedment is complex. The rehabilitation of a damaged pipe by means of a liner further complicates the interaction. Analyses by theories of elasticity are not adequate. Soil is paniculate. At performance limits pipes are plastic. Liners are plastic. Pertinent properties of plastic liners includes creep and long-term strength regression. Future analyses will be developed upon fundamental principles of structural mechanics. Concerted research on long-term properties of materials is essential. Future education and research must emphasize accurate models supported by adequate testing.
