Abstract: An ultrawideband radar facility has been developed at the Naval Ocean Systems Center in San Diego, CA. The overall objective is to explore experimentally and analytically the potential of technology based on an ultrawide fractional bandwidth radar waveform. Measured data has been and will be collected on a variety of targets in the presence of sea clutter, multipath and radio frequency interference (RFI). One specific objective of the system is to characterize the sea echo environment as sensed by an ultrawide fractional bandwidth radar waveform. This reflectivity data is being used to develop and validate a viable, credible ultrawideband radar system analysis and design capability. The facility utilizes two 30-foot paraboloidal reflectors, one each for transmitting and receiving. The source generates a pulse with a rise time of 200 picoseconds and a continuous spectrum from 200 to 1000 MHz. The peak power of the source is 162 megawatts. Initial results include measurements of sea clutter, a small boat with and without a corner reflector, a 44-inch sphere suspended below a helicopter to serve as a calibration standard, the helicopter itself, a calibration tower standard, boats and ships of various sizes and RFI. This paper will present a description of the measurement facility and the measured returns from several targets.!7
