Abstract: In the minds of many, Fourier transform spectrometry isrestricted to applications in the infrared. In theultraviolet, the increasingly severe demands onoptical, data acquisition, and motion control systemsof the interferometer diminish the effectiveness of thetechnique. However, with recent advances in ultravioletoptics, data acquisition and sampling techniques forFourier transform spectrometers, these stringentdemands are easier to meet at vacuum ultravioletwavelengths and significantly reduce the cost ofFourier transform spectrometers. The FT700 spectrometerat NIST can operate at wavelengths as low as 140 nm,limited by the short wavelength cut-off of the calciumfluoride optics. We illustrate the capabilities of theFT700 spectrometer in the ultraviolet with severalrecent results in atomic emission spectrometry, plasmadiagnostics, and refractometry.!13
