This paper will describe several advanced software technologies that have been developed by SciSys for the space industry since 1982, which have a wider application for UAVs in the following areas:- 1. Robust Infrastructure Architecture: This has caused the software domain to expand from the spacecraft to encompass the whole mission (including other spacecraft, onboard systems, and the ground segment). This architecture can be used to develop a middleware framework for a robust hierarchical network for communications between the mission components (i.e. between UAVs and vehicle payloads) and across the ground/UAV segments. 2. Intelligent GNC systems: The requirements for deep space missions with limited ground contact and high performance specifications have produced advanced control systems that use intelligent software methods to produce an autonomous and robust GNC system suitable for extended UAV operations. 3. Mission Management: Future missions will require users to be given direct access to the spacecraft. This technology will enable the UAV to quickly generate, sequence, and schedule tasks in response to user requests. This study shall place these software technologies in context by outlining a distributed command and control architecture with flexible mission management and autonomous GNC for a future micro-UAV system.
