A recently completedrndemonstration project, funded partly byrnthe Wisconsin Focus on Energyrnprogram and Wisconsin Public ServicernCorporation, shows the effectiveness ofrnan energy efficient repulper rotorrndesign compared with that of arnconventional rotor. We conducted arndemonstration to measure thernperformance and energy consumptionrnof the energy efficient virgin pulprnrepulper of Wausau Paper inrnRhinelander, Wisconsin. This paperrndescribes the demonstration setting,rnshows the analysis, and discusses thernresults.rnCareful monitoring of the batchrnrepulping operation gave us a veryrngood picture of the energy savings. Wernmonitored the energy use and impactrnon pulp quality under the followingrnthree conditions:rn1. The existing conventionalrnrepulping blade (HOG rotor)rn2. A new conventional repulpingrnblade of the same style (sparernHOG rotor)rn3. A new energy efficientrnrepulping blade (HM rotor)rnThe HM rotor, a tall, swept-back bladerndesign, has been engineered to providerneffective turbulence of the fiber suspension and maximum rotor-fiberrncontact while consuming lowrnhorsepower (Figure 1).
