As is the case with almost all areas of science and technology, the field of thermal analysis has experienced significant advancements. Until about 1980, there was no automation for the thermoanalytical instrumentation from a commercial perspective and as a result, data acquisition and analysis based on strip chart recorders was a common practice. Sometime during 1980-1981, automated instruments were introduced to the marketplace, for example, TA's (formerly DuPont) 1090 and Perkin Elmer's 3600 Data Station. This marked the beginning of major advancements that we enjoy today in terms of not just productivity but also new / related techniques. Some of the major developments in the field of thermal analysis have been: popularity of DMA's (early 1980's), integration of rheology with thermal techniques (late 1980's), and the introduction of MDSC related techniques (early 1990's). Our presentation will provide a historic view of how AlliedSignal's corporate thermal analysis group transformed itself given the internal challenges and the availability of new instrumentation & techniques.
