The proper and safe functioning of dams is an extremely important matter of public safety and economics. It is imperative, therefore, to have a means of gathering information that can be used to assess dam performance and safety. Field measurements, the art of monitoring and quantifying the behaviour of structures and other engineering works by taking physical measurements, has traditionally been used by dam engineers for this purpose. Dam monitoring programs have contributed significantly to advancements in the state of the art of dam engineering in the 20th century. The list below of the Questions dealing with instrumentation and monitoring of dams that have been discussed at previous ICOLD Congresses indicates clearly the importance of this activity in dam engineering.
