The main design, construction, environmental programs and monitoring features are described for the Salto Caxias Hydroelectric Project, a 1 240 MW powerplant in operation on the Iguagu river in the State of Parana, southern Brazil. Special emphasis is given to the instrumentation supporting control and monitoring systems of the 67 m-high roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam. Salto Caxias is the second powerplant being built by COPEL with the use of RCC technique. The Jordao River diversion scheme was the first dam of COPEL with the use of this method and this experience was one of the factors for the selection of this type of dam for Salto Caxias. Salto Caxias construction began in January of 1995 and the commercial generation of the first unit was in the February 1999 - only four years of construction. After one year of operation, the monitoring system based on the vibrating wire technology permits to verify the good behaviour of the Salto Caxias RCC dam. Through the automation system of monitoring is possible in real-time to obtain the data with quickness and confidence.
