MONTE DA ROCHA DAM ANALYSIS OF MONITORING RESULTS

The results collected in the monitoring scheme of Monte da Rocha dam, a zoned earthfill 51 m in height, built between 1969 and 1970, are presented and analysed. The explanation of the causes of excessive settlements occurred in the dam and, particularly, in the neighbourhoods of the highest instrumented sections, is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on certain characteristics of the dam and the foundation, on its construction and on the installation of the embedded instruments, as they are important factors influencing the dam behaviour. Despite the first complement of the monitoring scheme has been implemented some years ago, the need of a new complement, to be implemented after the execution of corrective measures regarding the excessive settlements, aiming at following the further dam behaviour, is stressed. The monitoring results show that, so far, the settlements of the dam do not endanger the dam safety.
