The Rules Dam, located in the province of Granada, Spain, is an arch of 130 m height over the Guadalfeo River. Due to its geographic situation in a medium-risk seismic area, it comes to be very important to guarantee the best possible quality in the contact between the dam and the foundation rock. With this purpose, it has been made, immediately before laying concrete, a detailed geologic survey of the fracturing in the rock mass, together with a detailed monitoring campaign through microseismic refraction. The analysis of the geophysical survey has been made defining for each section a detailed elastic model (four-layer), testing if it reproduces approximately the real seismic recordings, and adjusting it properly for that purpose. Comparing the geological data obtained independently with the geophysical interpretation, there is an excellent coincidence among them, and that explains satisfactorily the structure of the rock mass and permits the design of the grouting in the concrete contact with enough accuracy.
