Hydraulic structure, such as gravity dam, is a system structure. Important random variables and probable failure modes as well as their correlation must be studied in detail. With an example, before mentioned method is proved feasible, although the statistical work on its loads and mechanical parameters is still difficult and its failure modes are also complex. Although only narrow limitation of the dam's failure probability is obtained, it is very useful to warn of impending failure and avoid brittle failure. This will contribute to the optimum design of the structure and decrease failure probability.
