Xcel Energy AC Interference Program: Metallic Pipelines

Given the continued transmission build out within the SPS region, this program was tasked to investigate the potential impact to new transmission line projects sited near metallic pipelines. After more than a year of investigation, there is one clear finding: AC Interference from high voltage transmission lines onto metallic pipelines needs to be analyzed in order to be understood. With the continued construction of electrical transmission lines within the SPS region, as well as the dense existing infrastructure of the Oil & Gas industry within this same area, it is not practical for Xcel Energy to site its transmission lines to completely avoid all risk specific to AC Interference.
